Bologna, October 3rd 2016 – First stakeholder/end-user workshop

The first stakeholder/end-user workshop has been organized under the auspices of the “Associazione Geotecnica Italiana”, of the “Ordine degli Ingegneri della Provincia di Bologna” and of the “Ordine dei Geologi della Regione Emilia Romagna”.
The number of participants registered at the conference is equal to 205 subdivided in the following categories.

  • engineers and geologist representative of municipalities, local authorities, governmental institutions
  • university staff
  • consultant firms
  • practitioners

The event has been fully recorded and transmitted via streaming television on the internet http://videocenter.lepida.it/videos/video/2509/?live=true. At the same time, a link has been created in Facebook to posting the streaming video https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=liquefact. and 129 attendees have been recorded for the morning session, 176 for the afternoon session.

The presentations have been subdivided in the following three main sessions with 16 presentations.
The first session of the morning, chaired by Dr. Gabriele Bartolini Responsible for the Geological and Land Service of the of the Emilia Romagna Region, has been devoted to the presentations of a number of stakeholders/end users who all emphasized the importance of studying the liquefaction as very dramatic consequences and significant economic loss may come from this phenomenon.
There after three presentations have been given:

  • one by current advisory board member prof. Misko Cubrinovski from the University of Canterbury at Christchurch (New Zealand) reporting the experience of the 2011 seismic sequence of Christchurch where significant liquefaction was registered
  • the second from project partner prof. Vincenzo Fioravante of the University of Ferrara, reporting the experience of liquefaction in the 2012 earthquakes of Emilia Romagna
  • the third from project partner prof. Carlo Lai of the University of Pavia and scientific coordinator of the project, describing the organization of Liquefact

In the second session of the morning, held after the coffee break and chaired by Dr. Luca Martelli of the Emilia Romagna Region, three different aspects of liquefaction, namely mitigation, assessment and standardization have been presented.

The afternoon session, chaired by project partner Prof. Alessandro Flora of the University of Napoli, has been devoted to the description of the different work packages. The presentations have been subdivided in two groups (from WP1 to WP5 and from WP6 to WP9) and at the end of each group a discussion has been opened by the chairman. During this discussion, numerous questions and comments have been raised by the floor.
